MONOCHROMES WITH A SPLASH OF COLOUR

Instructor Jane Steele

Jane Steele moved to Nova Scotia from England in 2010 and opened River House Rug Hooking in 2012. Her love of textiles began early—by age six she was already making clothes for her dolls—and has been a lifelong passion ever since. Jane studied textiles at university and went on to build a successful career in London’s textile and fashion industry, where extensive international travel exposed her to a wide range of art, design traditions, and creative influences.

Drawing on this rich background, Jane brings a fresh, contemporary perspective to rug hooking. She is widely admired for her innovative approach, strong design sense, technical skill, and fearless creativity. Her work reflects both a deep respect for traditional craft and a confident, original voice that continues to inspire a devoted following.

Monochromes with a Splash of Colour explores monochromatic rug hooking with a striking twist — an intentional pop of colour that brings the focal point to life. This accent can appear anywhere you choose: an object, the sky, or a single element you wish to emphasize, creating a modern and captivating contrast.

Participants may choose from approximately 20 pre-designed patterns (approx. 25″ × 13″) or bring their own ideas for a custom-drawn design. Full kits are available (from Jane Steele) upon request, and students will have access to a wide selection of wools, fibres, and specialty materials throughout the class.

Instruction includes a range of advanced techniques such as:

  • Sculpting
  • Chain stitch and bead stitch
  • Reverse hooking
  • Combining cut sizes
  • Blending wool with other fibres

These techniques offer exciting ways to add depth, texture, and dimension to your work. Suitable for all skill levels, this workshop is both creatively rewarding and thoroughly enjoyable — and you’ll leave with a meaningful piece well underway, ready to take home.

MAJESTIC CATTAILS

Instructor: Dwight Gallagher – Nova Scotia

Dwight Gallagher discovered rug hooking in 2000 and has been passionate about the craft ever since. For Dwight, rug hooking is both a creative outlet and a form of therapy — rooted in encouragement, authenticity, and fun. A respected teacher and longtime leader within the rug-hooking community, he is known for his realistic landscapes and for showing how subtle details such as colour shifts, shadows, and highlights can transform a rug. Dwight brings a generous spirit to his teaching, believing that learning flows both ways and that every class offers something new.

Majestic Cattails explores the quiet beauty of cattails — plants often overlooked, yet rich with symbolism and visual interest. Students will learn how to hook cattails and strap leaves in a swamp-like setting, focusing on depth, perspective, and seasonal colour changes in the foliage. Techniques such as three-value shading, directional hooking, and creating murky, reflective water will be covered. Participants may also be encouraged to gently bend a few traditional hooking rules to achieve a more realistic and expressive result.
The pattern measures 20″ × 12″ and is the first in a planned four-season cattail series.

FIBRE ART FUSION: BLENDING TECHNIQUES

Instructor: Yvonne Iten-Scott – Ontario

Yvonne Iten-Scott is a contemporary textile artist and highly sought-after teacher, recognized for her fearless, exploratory approach to rug hooking and fibre art. Recent international attention — including the censorship of one of her artworks in the United States — has unexpectedly opened new doors, making 2026 an especially busy and exciting year. Yvonne will serve as keynote speaker for both the Ontario Rug Hooking Guild’s 30th Anniversary Conference and the ATHA Conference in Salt Lake City. She will also be teaching at Sauder Village Rug Hooking Week and exhibiting student work created with the Green Mountain Guild.

Fibre Art Fusion: Blending Techniques

At Periwinkle Laine’s June Retreat, Yvonne will guide students through an open-ended, creative class that celebrates experimentation, personal expression, and gently breaking the rules. Rather than working from a fixed pattern, participants will build an organic, free-form piece inspired by natural forms such as agate stone. A wide range of techniques may be explored, including hooking, punching, braiding, standing wool, proddy, quillies, wet felting, and sculpting. Linen stretched on copper piping allows for sculptural shaping, with the option to leave the copper in place for wall hanging or remove it for a finished floor rug. This class encourages curiosity, confidence, and creative risk-taking, resulting in a truly one-of-a-kind textile piece.
