MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR
Jane Steele moved to `Nova Scotia from England in 2010 and opened River House Rug Hooking in 2012. Her love of textiles began early—by age six she was already making clothes for her dolls—and has been a lifelong passion ever since. Jane studied textiles at university and went on to build a successful career in London’s textile and fashion industry, where extensive international travel exposed her to a wide range of art, design traditions, and creative influences. Drawing on this rich background, Jane brings a fresh, contemporary perspective to rug hooking. She is widely admired for her innovative approach, strong design sense, technical skill, and fearless creativity. Her work reflects both a deep respect for traditional craft and a confident, original voice that continues to inspire a devoted following.
LEARN ABOUT JANE’S CLASS
Monochromes with a Splash of Colour explores monochromatic rug hooking with a striking twist — an intentional pop of colour that brings the focal point to life. This accent can appear anywhere you choose: an object, the sky, or a single element you wish to emphasize, creating a modern and captivating contrast. Participants may choose from approximately 20 pre-designed patterns (approx. 25″ × 13″) or work with Jane to create a custom-drawn design. Full kits are available (from Jane Steele) upon request, and students will have access to a wide selection of wools, fibres, and specialty materials throughout the class.
Instruction includes a range of advanced techniques such as:
• Sculpting
• Chain stitch and bead stitch
• Reverse hooking
• Combining cut sizes
• Blending wool with other fibres
These techniques offer exciting ways to add depth, texture, and dimension to your work. Suitable for all skill levels, this workshop is both creatively rewarding and thoroughly enjoyable — and you’ll leave with a meaningful piece well underway, ready to take home.
ABOUT THE RETREAT
The Periwinkle Laine Rug Hooking Retreat fee includes your two-day class, a full day Periwinkle Laine Hook-In, three lunches, and daily refreshments throughout the retreat, along with free parking and Wi-Fi at Holland College. Accommodations are not included; however, Holland College has reserved a block of affordable rooms at Glendenning Hall for retreat participants. Full accommodation details, booking instructions, and next steps will be provided once your retreat registration is complete.
REGISTRATION – PAYMENT – INFORMATION
Choose your class/instructor (spaces are limited to 15 persons per class).
Choose your payment option: pay in full, or pay a non-refundable $50 + tax deposit to hold your spot.
- If you paid a deposit, Periwinkle Laine will email you an invoice for the remaining balance by March 30, 2026 (balance due April 1, 2026).
Complete your registration by submitting your chosen payment option.
- Once we’ve received your registration & payment (full or deposit), we’ll send you retreat and class details: retreat schedule and logistics, your class information (pattern/supplies), the Hook-In plan, and Glendenning Hall accommodation info with booking steps.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER YOU REGISTER?
Once you’re registered, you can relax—we’ve got the rest covered. Within a few weeks, you’ll hear from Periwinkle Laine with all the good stuff: retreat details, Glendenning Hall accommodation options, and how to book if you’d like to stay on campus. After April 1, 2026, your instructor will reach out with class-specific information, including what to bring and how to get ready. Coming from off-Island?
