Discover the joy of rug hooking with Periwinkle Laine’s hook-ins.  These gatherings welcome rug hookers of all ages and skill levels to unite in a shared passion for this beloved craft. Experience the camaraderie as you swap ideas, create, and celebrate the art of rug hooking together. Pack your lunch and let us treat you to complimentary coffee and tea, as we start around 9:30 am, indulging in rug hooking until about 2:30 pm. Periwinkle Laine also brings an enticing array of rug hooking supplies for sale in our wool boutique. Enjoy laughter and a fun time in the comfort of a bright, clean, and accessible hall. Join us for a day filled with creativity, connection, and endless enjoyment!

Rug Hooking 101 - The Next Generation

Are you ready to embark on a creative journey in the world of rug hooking? Our in-person class, “Rug Hooking 101 – The Next Generation,” is the perfect starting point for beginners and those with minimal experience. This popular course is designed to introduce you to the fundamental steps of designing and completing a beautiful hooked piece.

Course Outline:

Creative Inspiration: Unleash your creativity and find inspiration from various sources to kickstart your rug hooking adventure.

Designing the Vision: Learn how to translate your ideas into a tangible design, incorporating key design elements to create a visually appealing rug.

Preparing the Foundation: Gain practical skills in selecting the right foundation material and size to begin your rug hooking project.

Colour Planning: Explore the enchanting world of color theory and discover how to plan and execute a harmonious color palette.

Preparing the Wool: Get hands-on experience in selecting wool, your primary medium, for the hooking process.

Pulling Loops: Master the essential technique of pulling loops, adding texture and depth to your rug.

Exploring Texture, Value, and Movement: Delve into the nuances of texture, value, and movement to create dynamic and captivating pieces.

Finishing: Learn the critical finishing touches to make your project truly shine.

Throughout this course, you will receive expert guidance, making it accessible and enjoyable for all. Whether you’re seeking a new creative outlet or looking to expand your crafting skills, “Rug Hooking 101 – The Next Generation” is your gateway to creating beautiful, handcrafted rugs and hooked pieces. Join us for an enriching and inspiring journey as you unlock the world of rug hooking and express your unique artistic vision.

Workshops

We offer workshops to hone specific rug hooking skills.  Our workshops are 3.5 hours long and are designed to teach the hooker how to learn or perfect a certain skill or technique.  It is best described like a crash course, taught by an experienced hooker, in one of the following areas:

  • Finishing
  • Repairing
  • Designing
  • Colour Planning
  • Digital Technology and Rug Hooking

RETREATS

UPCOMING RUG HOOKING RETREAT

Periwinkle Laine’s Rug Hooking Retreat will take place from June 4th to June 7th, 2024, in our hometown, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, CANADA.

This retreat promises an unforgettable experience where learning, creativity and relaxation meet.

Here’s what you can expect:

1. Needle Felting Class: Immerse yourself in the art of needle felting during a three-hour class, with Lisa from the Messy Crow,  where you’ll craft a unique 5 x 7 felted picture. All supplies and tools will be provided for your convenience.

2. Kintsugi and Rug Hooking Workshop: Delve into the fusion of the ancient Japanese art of Kintsugi and rug hooking in a full-day class led by the esteemed Linda Marchbank, a local artist and renowned rug hooking teacher.

3. Quillies Crafting Evening: Enjoy an evening of fun and creativity as you learn to create quillies using fabric scraps, shaping them into charming decorations like flowers, Christmas trees and more.

4. Finishing Demonstrations and More: Take part in hands-on demonstrations and engaging activities tailored to refine your rug hooking abilities and still have ample time to unwind, kick back, gaze out the window, soak up the sun, and let your creativity flourish. 

All of this is included in the retreat package for the price of $450+ tax, per person.

Additionally, you’ll be treated to a delightful pizza party, as well as lunches on Wednesday and Friday, along with coffee, tea, and daily snacks. Free parking will be provided for your convenience.

The retreat will take place in the Holland College’s  Centre for Applied Arts, Science and Technology (CAST Building). The space offers abundant natural light, air conditioning, and stunning views overlooking the Hillsboro River and downtown Charlottetown. Elevators are available for convenience.

You’ll have plenty of time to work on your own projects in the sunny ambiance, with the added bonus of access to our on-site wool boutique and finishing station for all your rug hooking needs.

Accommodations are not included in the retreat price. However, Holland College’s Glendenning Hall at Holland College offers affordable and clean residence options. Periwinkle Laine has reserved a block of rooms for retreat participants; reservation details and rental rates are below.

Reserve your Spot: Visit Periwinkle Laine’s Hookery and reserve your spot. Secure your space with a $200 deposit or pay the total amount.  Final payment due by May 1, 2024 and no refunds will be given for cancellations made after May 5, 2024.

Accommodations: If you require accommodations, consider booking an apartment at Holland College’s Glendenning Residence. Apartments feature two or three bedrooms with separate bedrooms, private bathrooms, continental breakfast, internet access, full kitchen, and air conditioning. Rates are $129 for single/double occupancy or $149 respectively (rates are based on a per/night stay plus taxes and are based on 2 adults – please confirm rates with Holland College).

Periwinkle Laine is not responsible for collecting or booking room rentals.

A block of rooms has been reserved for participants (arrivals on June 3 or 4th and departures on June 7 or 8th). Rooms will be held until May 1, so be sure to book early.

There are many fabulous hotels for rent in downtown Charlottetown, and most are within walking distance of the Holland College location. However, Charlottetown is a tourist destination, and we recommend you book early.
