oCT 17 - 19, 2024 Location: Amherst, NS

Exciting news! The NS Fibre Arts Festival is just around the corner, and we are thrilled to announce that Periwinkle Laine will be hosting a special 2-day Poppy Madness Rug Hooking Course. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to immerse yourself in a creative and enjoyable experience during the festival. Join us for two days of fun, learning, and artistic expression!

Rug hooking in the Maritimes is both an art and a craft that emerged in the 1800s as a way for poorer folks to make their own carpets. It quickly became a social activity, bringing people together, and remains so today. Our 2-day rug hooking course begins with an exploration of  history of rug hooking, exploring its evolution through photos and examples of rugs and wall hangings. The remainder is hands-on, with participants learning and perfecting rug hooking techniques to create a vibrant Poppy wall hanging.  Guided by Charlene and Debbie, they will work with various materials, developing new skills and discovering tips to enhance their creations. By the end of the course, everyone will leave with a completed piece, a sense of shared accomplishment, and new friendships formed through this communal activity.

What You Need to Know:

Charlene and Debbie: Charlene and Debbie are not only skilled but also fun to be with.  For the past few decades, they’ve been passionately sharing their love for rug hooking. They’ve taught community school in Prince Edward Island and have led both in-person and virtual courses for Periwinkle Laine, the Nova Scotia Rug Hooking Guild, PEI Fibre Festival, and WoolStock East. Their workshops are a blend of expertise, enthusiasm, and enjoyment.

What’s included?

Periwinkle Laine takes care of everything. We provide all the materials and equipment needed to create a hooked masterpiece. Participants just need to bring enthusiasm, and we’ll handle the rest, ensuring a hassle-free and enjoyable creative experience.

The pattern is approximately 10 x 12 inches. We supply patterns, hooks, scissors, rug frame (to hook on), and enough wool to hook the pattern. The hook, scissors and rug frame remain Periwinkle Laine’s while the hooked piece is taken home by participants.

What does it cost?

$250.00 + tax for the kit, use of all equipment and instruction.  Classes will begin at 9:30am and end around 3:30pm.

This course will be delivered over a two-day period in the town of Amherst Nova Scotia (actual venue to follow).

This retreat was an unforgettable experience where learning, creativity and relaxation met.

Here’s what it included:

1. Needle Felting Class: a three-hour class, with Lisa from the Messy Crow, Souris PEI.

2. Kintsugi and Rug Hooking Workshop: Linda Marchbank explored the Japanese art of Kintsugi and rug hooking in a full-day class.

3. Quillies Crafting Evening: We enjoyed  an evening of fun and creativity and learned all there was to learn about quillies.

The retreat took place in the Holland College’s  Centre for Applied Arts, Science and Technology (CAST Building).   This was an awesome building, perfect for this type of retreat.

Accommodations were not included in the retreat price. However, Holland College’s Glendenning Hall at Holland College offered affordable and clean residence options. Many of us took advantage and stayed at Glendenning Hall.  It was great.

Reserve for 2025:  Plans are already underway for a June 2025 event.  It will be held at the same location in early June.  If you are interested please send us your name and email address – we will keep you updated as plans unfold.
